Plane Spotting Abu Dhabi

Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Airport

Location: ***

Fantastic location with a walkway connecting the hotel to the airport. The hotel has free wifi in all areas and a great restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and evening meal (buffet style) along with a costa coffee. The hotel pool has a fridge with a free supply of bottled water. As it is connected to the airport, a further range of restaurants and fast food (McDonalds) can be found inside in a ten minute walk from the hotel down the connected walkway. The hotel has free parking for those driving down from Dubai.

A free shuttle bus operates to Abu Dhabi City and YAS Island for those looking to sightsee or visit  Ferrari World Theme Park or the waterparks.

Spotting: ***

Great for spotting. The hotel has a rooftop pool which overlooks a lot of the airport. Certain rooms also have views over towards the airport, with roomS 505,507 and 520 having confirmed views. The best views can be had from 5th floor rooms, however these are smoking rooms and must be booked at the time of reservation. Fourth floor rooms also have adequate views. Alternate views are also available from the corridor windows.

Aircraft parked on the actual terminal building are blocked from sight however the taxiways and parallel runways are fully visible therefore any aircraft movements can be seen. Aircraft on the taxiway and nearest runway can be read off with binoculars, aircraft on the far runway require flight tracking software (however they have to taxy to the terminal anyway so you would get them on the taxiway.

Room 457 has a double bed and confirmed views as stated above. Room 446 is a twin room with restricted views of the hanger area and end of one of the runways. Room numbers ending in *13-*19 are reported to have the above views.

The rooftop pool is open from 0730-2200 and has plenty of table and chairs. There are numerous power points for laptops (3 pin uk style). The free hotel wifi works very well on the rooftop pool area.

Photos: * As from late February 2014, photography has been banned from the rooftop pool area and hotel premises at the request of the Abu Dhabi Police. No photography signs have been posted around the pool area. and the rules are been enforced by the hotel staff.
Value: ***

Fantastic value with prices starting from £33 a night.

OTHER YAS ISLAND HOTELS

Yas Island is situated on the approach and climb out (depending on wind direction) and therefore it is reasonable to expect that other hotels on the Island may offer views of over flying aircraft. To find a list of all hotels on Yas Island click here

OTHER ABU DHABI HOTELS WITH VIEWS OF AL BATEEN EXECUTIVE AIRPORT AND ABU DHABI INBOUNDS

The Traders Hotel (featured on the AGODA  website) and Ritz Carlton (click on the AGODA link)  are both luxury hotels with beach areas located abeam a 1 mile final to Al Bateen Executive Airport. No Airport views are reported, however inbounds and outbounds can easily be seen from the beach area. In addition, when on the north westerly runways (used mainly in day time), inbounds to Abu Dhabi Intl Airport overfly the hotel at around 8000 feet and are tied up on flight tracking software. Both of these hotels are ideal for couples and family breaks, with the chance to see some aircraft as a bonus.

Please note that Runway 31L/13R is closed to at least the end of 2014 so the views mentioned above will not be possible. Also there is now a Premium Inn beside Terminal 3 offering decent apron views.

The closer Runway 13R/31L is now open and used at varying times throughout the day and night in conjunction with 13L/31R

Rooftop photography at the pool has been permanently banned by airport security effective today 24 Feb 2015. Very sad!

Just a little bit of information about the Abu Dhabi Premier Inn rooms that
served us so well – I had room 511 which looking Southeast gave good views of
the thresholds of runways 31L & 31R and the other room we had was 506 which
gave good views Northwest towards the thresholds of runways 13L & 13R.
I looked at the other room numbers for this floor and 501 to 508 would give
views Northwest views whilst 509 to 516 (note there was no 513) gave Southeast
views. Rooms 556-561 also looked Northwest and 517-224 Southeast. At the end of
the corridor serving rooms 501 to 508/509 to 516 there was a big window which
enables you to look out across the middle of the airfield (where the new
terminals are being built) so if anything is missed from your room because it
has landed from the wrong direction with regards to your room view, turned short
or on the far runway, you still have a chance to get it if you are quick enough
whilst it is on the taxi from runway to stand….
