Plane Spotting Frankfurt

Plane Spotting Frankfurt

Frankfurt Airport has long been a favourite of aircraft enthusiasts from all around the world. Plane Spotting at Frankfurt has become slightly more difficult since the closure of the main spectators terrace on terminal 1 a few years ago. There are however, many hotels which have appeared on the perimeter which offer great views, or are close to the many official photography vantage points around Frankfurt Airport. Our personal favourites are the Hilton Garden Inn which enables plane spotting from the hotel room, or the old favourite, The Intercity Hotel which as well as offering views, is also only a short walk from the end of runway viewing decks.

The Sheraton Frankfurt Airport
Is situated behind the terminal. It is in the same complex as the Frankfurt Airport Rail Station and The Hilton Garden Inn below. The complex has numerous shops for convenience.
Location: *** Great location, attached to the terminal by a walkway.
Spotting: **

A high level floor is a must to see over the terminal buildings in front of the hotel. From here, providing that you ask for an airport facing room, you will get a view of one of the terminal 1 cul de sacs, as well as Runways 25C/25L (the older runways). The photo below shows the views available from the airport facing rooms.High level rooms at the back of the hotel  have great views of the new Runway 25R approach.

Photos: *

Souvenir shots only from airport facing rooms due to buildings and clutter. The terminal is only a short walk away where you can catch the monorail to the terminal viewing deck.

Rear facing rooms are reported to offer great photo opportunities of aircraft on short final to the new runway.

Value: *** Expensive at around £109 a room.

Hilton Garden Inn Frankfurt Airport
Is situated behind the terminal. Only the Sheraton Hotel separates this hotel from the actual terminal itself. It is in the same complex as the Frankfurt Airport Rail Station. The complex has numerous shops for convenience. The hotel offers free wifi to its customers.
Location: *** Great location, attached to the terminal by a walkway.
Spotting: ** A high level floor is a must as the Sheraton, and terminal building blocks views from the lower levels. Try to secure a room on the 11th floor facing the airport if at all possible. Views of the southern runways (25C/25L) and taxiways can be had from here meaning that most of the action on the airport can be seen

Further report below credit Ian Hawkridge

A friend and I have just returned from two days at Frankfurt and stayed at the above hotel.I requested a room on the 11th floor overlooking the airport, and was duly allocated 11255 on arrival. Rooms 11239-11263 all have the same views overlooking the original two runways, taxyway’s, freight apron and where the old USAF base was, and both the C-47 & C-54 can be seen from the room. You can’t see into any of the cul-de-sac areas though as the Sheraton blocks those views, however everything can be read off with 16X bino’s, and if you have SBS then everything that takes off on the cross runway will be identified.

Now onto what you get for your money. Aswell as the above, Wifi is free in all rooms, beds are really comfortable, nice bath, shower and toilet with free soap, body wash etc etc. An “eat as much as you like” breakfast either Continental or English style is available in the restaurant, plus a chef to make you pancakes or omelettes to order. So really it’s great value, considering it’s only a 10 minute walk from the Information Desk in T1 (no ringing up and then waiting for a bus to arrive) There are also multiple food outlets available as you walk to the hotel (if you don’t fancy paying the hotel prices for for an evening meal) Flying with Lufthansa or any of the Skyteam airlines , then you have your own check-in desk area only 2mins from the hotel with both manned desks and auto check-in machines. Ohhh nearly forgot…….. There is one of the airport information screens in the hotel lobby giving all of the registrations, so you can plan your day knowing what you’ ll see if you decide to stay in your room until 12 noon, before heading off to T2. Hope that this is of help to some of you

Report 2

Upper (11th) Floor room recommended. Below might be too obstructed.
Southerly facing airport view rooms are odd numbers from 11239-11269. Workable views over rooftops of all activity on 07/25 parallel runways and cargo ramps but not stands. Virtually all readable (through soundproof window) with decent optics although probably pretty useless for photos. SBS very useful to monitor activity on far runway 18/36 and numerous overflights.

Rooms well equipped with even one UK style plug socket (!) and free wireless internet. Decent work area and unstocked fridge which can be stocked from nearby supermarket in station complex which also has various eateries.

Photos: * Souvenir shots only due to buildings and clutter. The terminal is only a short walk away where you can catch the monorail to the terminal viewing deck.
Value: ** From around £60 a room

Park Inn Frankfurt Airport
Is situated around a 5 minute journey from the terminal by free shuttle bus. The hotel is situated just off the North Eastern perimeter of the airport and looks out towards the Runway’s 25C and 25L. There is reported to be a supplement to pay if you require wi-fi at this hotel.
Location: *** Good location overlooking the Runway thresholds. Free minibus to terminal and associated viewing deck. About a 20-30 minute walk to the viewing area at the end on the 25C/L runways
Spotting: ** Ask for a room overlooking the airport. Room 503 has reported views of arrivals onto 25L/25C, departures and also departures climbing off into the distance from the cross Runway 18. The fire exit stairs on this floor level (next to room 503) also gives views out behind the hotel onto the approach to the new runway, therefore with flight tracking software, or a scanner very little should be missed. Note the top floor 5 is reported to be double beds only.

Report 2 2017

Just returned from 4 days staying at the Park Inn Radisson at Frankfurt Airport. As published the hotel gives views of arrivals to 25L and 25C runways. Ideally you will need SBS equipment due to the difficulty with using telescopes of binoculars in the short space of viewing time. I stayed in room 209 and if you craned your head to the right against the window, you could make those aircraft landing on the new runway.

In future this hotel will be of no use as there is building work under way across the road that will completely obliterate the view.

For what was on offer, the room was quite expensive at 115 euros per night and that does not include breakfast. (Available for an additional 20 euros!!) Walked each day to the viewing area (15 mins).

Report 3 2018

Was in Room 503 ,Building work going on at the moment is to the left of the room so doesn’t affect the view, great if landing on the west ,a tree is in the way if they are landing on the new runway from the east .But can’t depart that runway so you should be able to see using sbs for runway 18..

Photos: ** None reported directly from the hotel, however the terminal viewing deck is a 5 minute shuttle bus ride away, or the end of Runway viewing deck a 20-30 minute walk
Value: ** Reasonable , expect to pay between £50-£60 for a room

Above : Views of the climb out or approach to Runway 07C AND 07R are possible at the Park Inn however future construction work may limit the rooms that view are possible from.

Meininger Hotel Frankfurt Airport
Is situated very near to The Park Inn above. The new runway to the north of the hotel is actually be more visible from this hotel, as at the moment there are no trees obstructing the views from lower levels, as there are in the Park Inn above. The hotel has a bar and outdoor patio area where you can sit in the summer with views of arriving traffic
Location: *** Good location overlooking the Runway thresholds. About a 20-30 minute walk to the viewing area at the end on the 25C/L runways
Spotting: ** here should be views of at least one runway whichever room you get, obviously higher floor are better. Those facing the airport will have similar views of 25L arrivals as you would get in the Park Hotel above. Rooms at the back of the hotel will have views of arrivals onto the new Runway. For those rooms facing the new runway, you will find corridor windows with views out over to the other side’s movements so with flight tracking equipment you shouldn’t miss a lot. Room 407 has confirmed views of the new Runway 25R approach
Photos: ** None reported directly from the hotel, however the terminal viewing deck is a 5 minute shuttle bus ride away, or the end of Runway viewing deck a 20-30 minute walk
Value: ** Very reasonable , expect to pay between £50-£60 for a room

The Intercity Hotel Frankfurt Airport
was formally known as the Steigenberger Esprix. The hotel is situated on the south of the airport opposite the cargo city. Note: Korean Air use this as a crew hotel, and since the introduction of A380 ops into Frankfurt many of the rooms are taken in advance. It appears that the Korean contract involved allocating the crews Runway view rooms therefore these rooms are now extremely limited at times. The hotel remains ideally situated for the westerly viewing decks, if you intend spotting from the room, the Park Inn may be the better option.
Location: ** Located on the south side of the airport with a shuttle bus to the airport terminals (charge applies). This is the nearest hotel to the viewing platform at the end of Runway 25L (a ten minute walk)
Spotting: ** Rooms 3020-3056 offer limited views of the runway. Room’s  3058, 3062 and 3070 have also been reported as having favourable views. Be advised that for the majority of time these rooms and the whole of the 3rd floor have been given up to Korean Air Crews meaning that it is now very difficult to get an elevated room with a view at this hotel.

A tv screen in the hotel lobby gives you the registrations of all due movements. In summer, the views from even the higher floored rooms is blocked by the foliage of the trees which are now tall enough to block the view. Things may improve slightly in the winter months, however viewing from this hotel is no longer ideal.

From room 2056 arrivals can be seen and read off above the tree line when landing from right to left however if landing from the other direction they would be on the ground and hard to read (especially in the summer due to the trees)

Photos: ** None directly from the hotel however the famous bridge over the Autobahn is only a 10 minute walk by footpath from the hotel, from this point great shots can be taken of inbound aircraft when they are using this runway
Value: ** Very good , expect to pay between £50-£70 for a room

NH Hotel Frankfurt Airport
is located just 1.5km North of the airport and only a 5 minute shuttle bus ride away. The shuttle bus is free of charge. The hotel has its own restaurant and bar, or for anyone who prefers eating out there is a nearby pizzeria. The hotel is located on short finals to the new Runway 25R. Found in the village of Kelsterbach the hotel seems to be just a short taxi ride to the spotting area at the threshold of runway 18. From here all arrivals on 07L or 07R can be seen. Runway 18 is only ever used for departures. This spotting area looks like becoming increasingly attractive due to the closure of the famous spectators terraces on Terminal 1. If you do use this area for spotting ensure you take food and drink with you as there are no shops around.
Location: *** Close to the airport and the spotters area’s at Runway 18 and 25R. Due to the opening of the new runway, this is probably the most centrally placed hotel to all the viewing sports at Frankfurt Airport
Spotting: *** Report from Bob Kimmings:

I can recommend the NH Hotel Kelsterbach. When using 25R you must keep your door closed otherwise the planes will fly through your room. The walk to the viewing area 25R is about twenty minutes, to the threshold of the runway is ten minutes. To get to the viewing deck in T2 take the shuttle bus, then the inter-terminal shuttle. I found no way by foot to get to the 18 viewing area

Photos: ** Certainly possible from the hotel-see the example below.
Value: ** Goodvalue. Prices are approximately £75 for a twin room during the week, and only £53 at weekends
