Plane Spotting Paris CDG

Hilton Hotel
Paris Charles De Gaulle is very ideally placed for plane spotting at Paris between the two main terminals. When reserving this hotel try and get a room on the 6th floor or higher which end in 01/03/05/07 and 29 (eg 401/403 and 429). From these rooms you will get a great view of the two taxiways that link the two terminals and a reasonable view of the charter apron. With a little bit of patience, most movements at terminal 1 can be seen. As these rooms are corner rooms a view of the freight area is possible. By walking to the lifts you get a great view of the holding points for the Northerly runways. With a decent pair of binoculars or telescope everything will be read off. Reports suggest that the hotel staff are familiar with spotters and seem to have no problems with this.

**Please note that the executive floor is now on the ground level and offers no views at all.

Location: *** Great location to view most of the movements at this very busy airport.
Spotting: ***

Expect to read off most things from the hotel. Ask for a room ending in the numbers described above. If none are available ask for a room on the 4th floor or above overlooking Concorde.

A further report can be found below:

Stayed at the Hilton, Paris CDG again last week, and have a few comments that might come in handy for your excellent site.

The rooms that overlook the taxyways plus Terminals 1 & 3 and “Concorde” are odd numbered 803 – 817 inclusive. Room 801 is a corner suite, so more expensive. When a/c land on the Southern runways (26L/R) nearly all of them can be seen from these rooms after they taxy off the runway. Only the smaller a/c mostly Air France CRJ’s, Emb’s and RJ-85’s seem to turn off early so you don’t see any of these.

Check in time is usually 14.00 and check out is 12.00, however a late check out at 13.00 is also available at no extra charge, so if the weather is inclement, then you don’t have to worry about where to go. If you’ve got a late flight back, after checking out just take the lift back to the 8th floor and sit in the very comfortable armchairs in the lobby area, because you can see both sets of runways from there. None of the staff (including security) bother you there. If they do ask what you are doing you just say that you’ve checked out and have a late flight, so you’ll be there for a few hours before going back to the airport. “No problem Sir” is usually their answer. A further report:

You need a high floor room facing east, rooms that end in ’16’ are corner rooms and have superb view of T2 and taxiway between terminals. The executive room is now on the ground floor and has no views of the airfield. End of each corridor has huge windows with either a view of T2, T3/T1, landings and take offs. each floor near the lifts have a small lobby and views can be seen from here. As I found out to my dismay, I booked an executive room, and as no airport view rooms were available, I had to have an inside room with no view. Don’t do the executive rooms, not worth it. Any room on floor 7,6,5 will have views. Shuttle bus only goes from T2 to the hotel and these are free. There is a shop in the train station (1 min walk away) and reasonably priced food and drink can be bought here and taken back to your room. As I found out, if you ask for a room facing the airport, they ignore the comments, even if you book far in advance. They are only interested in the business customer

Value: ***  Prices start at about £80 for a weekend stay and are considerably more expensive during the week.

Ibis Hotel CDG Terminal
CDG/Terminal is ideally positioned opposite the charter terminal 3. The hotel is directly outside of the bus terminal and train station making connections with Orly and Paris centre simple. If arriving into the low cost terminal 3 the hotel is only a 5 minute walk.
Location: *** Great location in the centre of the action. The remains of the famous spotting mound is situated outside of the hotel. The inter terminal buses stop directly outside of the hotel which means that all terminals are only a 5 minute walk away.
Spotting: ***

You have a choice to request a room facing the south (Air France terminal) or the North side of the airport. We recommend the north rooms as you get a view of the Northern non Air France terminal, link taxiway and the North Runways. Around 50% of the Air France traffic uses the northern runway to arrive or depart so you will not miss too much.

When requesting a north room ask for rooms 916 912 908 904 where you will get a view enabling you to read off most movements from the north side. For southbound views you are looking for room numbers 1033, 920 924 928 932 and 936 where you can read off traffic going to the Air France terminals.

Photos: *** Limited photos are possible from the North side rooms with a 400 lens (see below).
Value: *** Prices start at about £50 for a weekend stay making the Ibis one of the cheapest hotels in the central airport complex.

Pullman Paris CDG Airport Hotel
is located directly between Terminals 1 and 2. Certain rooms have views of the busy taxiways that link both terminals. Ask for a room on a high floor facing in an Easterly direction ie looking towards the Air France terminals. The hotel is in the shape of the letter “Y” so rooms facing  North may have views of Terminal 1, and rooms facing South may have views of the freight aprons, although this is not confirmed. The hotel is linked with both terminals by a complimentary shuttle bus.
Location: *** Very close to the action, located between both terminals.
Spotting: *** East facing rooms have great views of the taxiways.
Photos: * No reports available but the hotel is probably just a bit too far away for any decent photos.
Value: ** Not particularly cheap with a weekend rate of approximately £89.

Suitehotel CDG Paris Nord 2
is located off airport about 2km south west of the airport. When on westerly runways the departures of the south runways cross the hotel between 2000-4000 feet. When on easterlies the aircraft should be much lower. When on westerlies any arrivals into Le Bourget also fly more or less directly above the hotel

Location: ** Off airport, however the location gives views of all movements into or out of CDG depending on the wind direction
Spotting: *** Rooms ending in x01 x03 x05 x07 x09 and x11 on all floors will give views out onto the approach/climb out of all 4 runways. It is impossible to read aircraft off on all runways, however with a SBS box nothing will be missed
Photos: * No reports available but the hotel is probably just a bit too far away for any decent photos.
Value: ** Good value with a rooms from £60
