Plane Spotting Shanghai Hongqiao

Boyue Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Hotel (Air China) Last Update 2019

Is a brand new hotel at Hongqiao, opened in mid 2013. The ideal rooms are found on the Executive level of the hotel. This includes entry to the VIP lounge where breakfast is served and free soft drinks are available all day. This hotel is the number one choice for enthusiasts as a lot of movements can be seen at close quarters from here.

Views from the VIP lounge are said to be excellent. Note not all of the executive rooms have airport views, even if an airport view room is guaranteed on booking it is always worth confirming with reception that you have the correct view.

Location: *** Excellent, this hotel is located on the departure level (4th floor) of terminal 2, at the southern end past Starbucks. The hotel has a similar outlook to the Regal Hotel in Hong Kong.
Spotting: ***
Executive rooms are ideally required at the higher levels.Note that the Deluxe rooms are unsuitable as they only go up to the 7th floor which does not give you the required elevation above the terminal. 9th floor rooms or above are required. The executive rooms are found on the 11th or 12th floor. Room 1209 is confirmed as having a great view-this is a double room. Rooms are large, with large windows overlooking the airport.

Rooms ending in **01-**23 should have great views especially on the executive floors 11 and 12.

On the executive floor you will find a large window in the corridor which overlooks the bizz jet parking area. Good binoculars are required however to read of the executive aircraft.

The view is similar to the viewing deck (now closed), or staff canteen in terminal 2 but slightly to the right and is more elevated. Great views can be had of the terminal 2 main apron, along with terminal 1 across the runway and the executive aprons.

Everything arriving can easily be read off from the room. Everything taxing for departure from terminal 2 can be read off (even at night)although flight tracking may be needed for departures taxiing from terminal one, especially if the smog is bad.

On the rare days that visibility is good, any arrivals and departures from Pudong Airport can be easily seen from the room and identified using flight tracking software.

Photos: *** Good photo opportunities from the room. You are facing East so the best shots are taken in the afternoon. The windows are however heavily tinted and dirty which can effect the quality of some shots.

The departing A330 shot below demonstrates the possibilities from the room. The second photograph shows the room itself with the panoramic runway views in the background. A great hotel!

Hong Gang Shanghai Hotel – NOTE NO RECENT UPDATES-MAY NOW BE CLOSED OR TAKEN OVER April 2020
is located to the east of the terminal building and is very conveniently located for spotters. When booking this hotel, or upon arrival, ensure you ask for a room with an airport view. Higher rooms ending in even numbers are needed for the views shown below. Note that since the new terminal opened on the other side of the airfield, the apron shown below is rarely used. These rooms still have great views of the runway but the apron below is only used by Spring Airlines and a few international carriers.
Location: *** Very convenient for the airport. Room 910 has great views but just the one bed, room 606 is lower but almost as good with the bonus of 2 beds! Room 702 also has the 2 beds and gives and good vantage point as shown in the photos below.
Spotting: ***
If you get a room facing the airport then expect to read off the vast majority of the aircraft as it arrives or departs the runway

Photos: ** Good opportunities for aircraft which still use this apron (not many since the new terminal on the far side of the airfield was opened)
Value: *** Outstanding value at just £29 for a twin room.
Book:   This hotel is available through the AGODA website. There are many other hotels in the Hongqiao area close to the airport from which we are awaiting reports from. A comprehensive list of hotels can be found HERE

The view from room 702 is shown below. Note the apron is no where near as busy as shown below since the new terminal opened (double click photo to expand)
Arygyle Hotel          Last Update 2019
is located across the car park from the Hong Gang hotel shown above. Although the views from the rooms are not as near as the Hong Gang above, all movements can be seen and the quality of the hotel is reportedly much better.
Location: *** Very convenient for the airport and great views allow spotting from the room all day. The maintenance and one of the executive aprons are about a 15 minute walk from the hotel.
Spotting: ***
Rooms 817-820 and 917-920 give great views of the runway action. Due to the shape of the hotel, the higher the room number in the above range the better.

Floor ending in 17-20 above this level offer the same views, however they are more expensive.
Photos: *** With a 300 lens good shots will be possible.
Value: ** Prices around £53 for a twin room.
